Movies that Will Brighten Your Day

Do you ever have those days where you need a pick me up or need to get away from real life through a movie? Here are five of my favorites that can always make me feel better no matter how low I may be at the time. Whether it is making me laugh, seeing people in love, watching people get taken down, or just random funny moments, these movies cover it all! If you or someone you care about is currently in need of some cheering up, I suggest you see at least one of these movies today!

Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow

Based on the book by famous author Jane Austen, this quirky romance is filled with laughter and love. There are several versions of this film, but in my opinion this is the only one in which the cast truly captures the characters. I thoroughly enjoy how each actor/actress portrays the character completely; down to the very mannerisms they would have. If you watch every individual carefully they each have funny and curious things that they are doing, which keeps you interested throughout the film.

This movie has the classic Jane Austen setting in England, during the 1800's, where a woman named Emma Woodhouse finds she no longer has the guidance of her governess, as she has gotten married. Although she is sad at her loss, she gains great pride in taking responsibility for her governess finding love. This triggers a determination within Emma to make yet another perfect match, or so she thinks. It is funny and intriguing to watch this story unravel and you find that what you think may be right for others, or even yourself, is nowhere near to what is truly perfect. Gwyneth Paltrow plays a wonderful Emma and is accompanied by other great actors such as Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightly, Toni Collete as Harriet Smith, Alan Coming as Mr. Elton, and Ewan McGregor as Frank Churchill. The light and bubbly mood of this film will be sure to "lift your spirits," as Emma Woodhouse would say.

Don't call me sir; I work for a living.

Hollywood Homicide

If you are in need of some action instead a "girly" movie, then Hollywood Homicide is right up your alley. Actors Harrison Ford; one of the most well known actors of all time found in movies such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Fugitive and so many more, along with Josh Hartnett; known for his roles in Black Hawk Down, Lucky Number Sleven and others, are a detective team that will crack you up! There are parts of this movie that are so funny that I have to go back and watch the scene again because I laugh harder every time. It is a great movie, not only for laughs, but also to see a few good takedowns and punches when you are in the mood to see someone get a beating.

The main characters, the detective duo, find themselves leading a major investigation all while their lives outside of their job seem to be spiraling out of control. To make matters even more complicated, they find themselves being on the other end of an investigation. Harrison Ford and Josh Hartnett fill their roles in this film perfectly, as they play so well off of each other. The plot will take you down a sticky path while the duo tries to discover who is responsible for the homicide, they find that their outside lives are more involved with this crime than they think. It sounds intense, but the comedic timing in this film is hilarious!

Fun with Dick and Jane

I don't know about you, but if the movie has Jim Carrey in it, then I know I am about to enjoy some great comedic movie lines and scenes. This is an ideal movie to watch if you are finding it hard to make ends meat or hating your job.

Dick Harper, played by Carrey, and Jane Harper, actress Tea Leoni, lead a happy life with their son, in a big home, and have a maid to help them along way. Life seems to get even better for the Harpers when Dick receives a promotion at work and suggests to his wife to leave her job that she dislikes. To their dismay, not too long after receiving his promotion, the company Dick works for falls apart while his boss and the man responsible, Jack McCallister played by Alec Baldwin, leaves everyone to fend for themselves. You watch as the family struggles to keep their heads above water until it seems there is no other way that they will be able to make it financially, but suddenly Dick realizes there is one option he has not attempted. This movie is a roller coaster of great and bad moments that the couple experiences, many of which we can all relate to, but in the most hysterical way.

You sons of a motherless goat!

Three Amigos

This is an older movie, but a classic comedy in my book. It has one of the funniest trio actor combinations I've ever seen, which is comprised by Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short. This is one of those randomly hilarious movies where there is no rhyme or reason for most of the things that occur, which I find makes it great to watch in a group. With character names like Lucky Day, Dusty Bottoms, and Ned Nederlander, you know you are in for a good laugh.

Lucky, Dusty, and Ned are famous silent actors, in black and white films, during the year 1916 when they unexpectedly lose their job when asking for a pay increase from the studio executive. To clarify, the movie itself is not silent, only the films they are acting in within this movie. No sooner do they get kicked to the curb, they receive a telegram from a woman in a small village of Mexico, who thinks the men are real heroes, asking for their help to impede the "infamous" El Guapo, or "The Handsome." Looking to make some serious denero (money), they willingly accept the job, not knowing what they are really getting into. The irony and idiocy in this film makes you smile, you literally can't help it. Let me tell you, they didn't leave much out of this movie; there is music, action, romance, and even talking animals. I always seem to catch some funny new thing that is happening every time I watch this movie, so it is worth watching at least a few times.

The Holiday

If you are in a bad relationship, upset with your partner, or currently are getting over a relationship, then this is the movie for you. This is the best movie to watch in your pajamas with a blanket and your favorite treat. It is a movie about finding yourself while love and friendship find you. You completely fall in love with the four main characters. This famous cast includes Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black. At first I thought Jack Black was unlikely romance actor, but I think he did great in this film. Amanda Woods, Diaz, and Iris Simpkins, Winslet, lead almost completely opposite lives, but their common ground is that they both have failed romantic relationships. In a desperate act to get away from their current lives they switch homes through the Internet, which makes for the most life changing holiday they could have ever imagined. Both of these women's stories are heart felt and help you want to get back to a good place in your own life. Watching this will bring the warm fuzzy feeling that you are yearning for.

Feel Better

If you haven't watched these movies, then I highly recommend that you do. I lean on these movies when I am feeling bad. If they can also help you laugh during all that you might be going through, then they are worth a try. I hope by sharing these films with you that you will start to feel joyful. Hugh Sidney said, "A sense of humor... is needed armor. Joy in one's heart and some laughter on one's lips is a sign that the person down deep has a pretty good grasp of life."
